An Olympic Class in 1920 and 1928, the International Twelve Foot Dinghy was the first one-design racing dinghy to gain international recognition. Ninety five years after its launch the class still enjoys an enthusiastic and sizable following in the Netherlands, Italy and Japan, and is regaining popularity elsewhere. Over one hundred boats are expected to compete in the World Dinghy Championships to be held in Italy during July 2010.
The first International 12 dinghies to appear on Lake Geneva were built at Corsier Port in 1920 by the Chantiers de Constructions Navales du Léman for members of the Société Nautique de Genève. By 1940 there were approximately thirty dinghies sailing on the Petit Lac.
The prospects for the Lake Geneva Fleet are looking bright: Jean-Claude Marchand's dinghy has joined the fleet for the 2010 season, and another dinghy is undergoing restoration at Rolle. Contact me if you would like to try a 12-foot Dinghy!
